What is omohyoid?

Omohyoid is a muscle present in the neck region of humans. It is a flat and thin muscle that lies deep in the neck, crossing over the sternocleidomastoid muscle. The omohyoid muscle has two bellies, the superior and the inferior, which are connected by an intermediate tendon. It is innervated by the ansa cervicalis, a nerve network that supplies the muscles of the neck. The main function of the omohyoid muscle is to depress and retract the hyoid bone, which is important for swallowing and breathing. Dysfunction of this muscle can lead to difficulty in swallowing, speech, and breathing. It is also used as a reference point for locating important structures during surgeries and medical procedures in the neck region.
