What is onanism?

Onanism is an outdated term that referred to masturbation, named after the biblical character Onan who practiced coitus interruptus (withdrawing before ejaculating) to avoid fathering children for his deceased brother's wife. The term onanism was used to describe any sexual act in which an individual stimulates their own genitals to achieve sexual pleasure. Today, the term is less commonly used, and masturbation is considered a normal and healthy sexual behavior. Research shows that there are significant physical and psychological benefits associated with masturbation, including stress relief, improved sleep, and enhanced sexual function. However, excessive or compulsive masturbation can be a sign of a deeper psychological issue and may require professional help.
