What is oppressive?

Oppression refers to a situation in which a group or individual uses their power and influence to systematically marginalize and restrict the opportunities and freedom of another group or individual based on perceived differences. Oppression can take many forms, including social, political, economic, and cultural, and can be inflicted by individuals, institutions, or governments. Oppression can manifest in a variety of ways, including unequal distribution of resources, discrimination or prejudice based on race, gender, sexuality, religion or disability, and limiting access to education, employment, or political representation. Oppressive behaviors and practices would often lead to frustration, anger, low self-esteem, inequality, and feelings of being powerless and helpless among the oppressed. Addressing and challenging oppressive behavior and structures is an ongoing process that requires understanding, active protest, and a willingness to create change.
