What is opt?

OPT stands for Optional Practical Training. It's a temporary employment authorization available to F-1 students in the United States who are pursuing a degree in a STEM field and wish to gain practical experience related to their field of study. There are two main types:

  • Pre-Completion OPT: This allows eligible students to work part-time (up to 20 hours per week) while school is in session, or full-time during school breaks. This is available before graduation.

  • Post-Completion OPT: This allows eligible students to work full-time after graduation. It's typically granted for 12 months.

A critical extension to Post-Completion OPT is the STEM OPT Extension. This allows students with STEM degrees (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) to extend their Post-Completion OPT for an additional 24 months, for a total of 36 months. Eligibility for this extension depends on the student's degree being on the STEM Designated Degree Program List, and their employer meeting certain requirements related to training plans and compliance with labor laws. Applying for the extension requires a formal application process through the USCIS, including a Form I-765.

The entire OPT process is managed by the Designated School Official (DSO) at the student's university. They are the point of contact for questions about eligibility, application procedures, and compliance requirements. Students must maintain their F-1 Status throughout the OPT period.
