What is orthokeratotic?

Orthokeratotic refers to the skin disorder of hyperkeratosis, which is the abnormal buildup of keratin on the skin surface or hair follicles. Orthokeratotic hyperkeratosis is commonly seen in individuals with a condition called ichthyosis vulgaris, which is an inherited skin disorder that causes dry, scaly skin. Orthokeratotic hyperkeratosis can also be seen in other skin conditions, such as psoriasis, eczema, and skin cancer. The condition may cause skin discoloration, rough or scaly skin, and skin thickening. Treatment options include topical retinoids, keratolytic agents, and moisturizers to soften and remove the excess keratin.
