What is ospedali?

Ospedali is an Italian word for hospitals. Italy has a public health care system that provides universal coverage to its citizens and legal residents. Hospital care is an important component of this system. The Italian hospital system is divided into four levels:

  1. Local hospitals provide emergency care, primary diagnosis, and treatment.

  2. District hospitals provide specialized care, with a focus on surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, orthopedics, and pediatrics.

  3. Teaching hospitals are the largest and provide the highest level of specialized care.

  4. National Institutes and Research Hospitals provide highly specialized care and are often associated with research centers.

Most Italian hospitals are publicly owned and operated by the regional government. However, there are some private hospitals as well. The Italian healthcare system is highly regarded and provides quality care to patients.
