What is outgassing?

Outgassing is the release of gases trapped within a material, such as a solid, liquid, or gel, typically due to heating or exposure to a vacuum or low-pressure environment. This phenomenon is commonly observed in spacecraft and other high-tech industries, where materials need to be carefully chosen to prevent outgassing that could contaminate sensitive equipment or degrade performance.

Outgassing can also occur in everyday items, such as new furniture or electronics, where volatile chemicals released from materials can cause an unpleasant odor or health concerns. In some cases, outgassing can be harmful if the released gases are toxic or irritating.

To prevent outgassing in sensitive applications, materials with low outgassing properties are often used, and testing methods are employed to evaluate the amount and composition of gases released. Proper ventilation and monitoring can also help mitigate the effects of outgassing in enclosed spaces.
