What is oxo-proline?

Oxo-proline, also known as pyrrolidone carboxylic acid (PCA), is a naturally occurring amino acid produced in the body by enzymatic modification of proline. It is found in high concentrations in the skin and connective tissues and plays an important role in collagen synthesis and maintenance of skin elasticity.

Oxo-proline is also used as a dietary supplement and is marketed as an anti-aging ingredient in skincare products. It has been shown to have antioxidant properties and may help to protect skin from oxidative damage caused by UV radiation and environmental pollutants.

There is some evidence to suggest that oxo-proline supplementation may improve cognitive function and memory in older adults, although further research is needed to confirm these findings.

Oxo-proline is generally considered safe when used in recommended doses, although some people may experience minor side effects such as gastrointestinal discomfort or mild allergic reactions. It should not be used by pregnant or breastfeeding women or individuals with kidney or liver disease.
