Pannonia was a province of the Roman Empire located in Central Europe. It was situated predominantly in what is now Hungary, but also included parts of Austria, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Croatia. The region was known for its fertile plains, which made it an important agricultural center. It was also a crossroads of trade routes, connecting the Mediterranean world with Central and Eastern Europe. The Roman Empire established Pannonia as a province around 15 BC, and it remained under Roman rule until the decline of the empire in the 5th century AD. During this time, Pannonia was an important military stronghold for the Roman army. The province was divided into several smaller regions, each with its own local officials and governing structures. Today, the legacy of Roman rule can be seen in the many archaeological sites found throughout the region.
