What is pantsir?

Pantsir is a family of short to medium-range surface-to-air missile (SAM) systems developed by Russia. The system was designed to provide air defence to military, industrial and administrative facilities, as well as land forces. It is capable of engaging both air and surface targets including unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), helicopters, cruise missiles, and other precision-guided weapons.

Pantsir has two variants: Pantsir-S1 and Pantsir-SM. The Pantsir-S1 system is mounted on a tracked vehicle and can engage up to four targets simultaneously with its 30mm cannon and eight missiles. The system can operate in various weather conditions and is also capable of engaging targets flying at low altitudes.

The Pantsir-SM system is an upgraded version of the Pantsir-S1. It features a new radar and upgraded missile system, which increases its range and engageability. The system can operate in more challenging environments, such as electronic warfare conditions, and can track and engage more targets simultaneously.

Pantsir systems have been exported to several countries, including Algeria, Syria, and the United Arab Emirates, among others. The system has seen action in several conflicts, including the Syrian Civil War, and has been credited with shooting down numerous incoming projectiles and unmanned aerial vehicles.
