What is penes?

  • Anatomy: The penis is the male reproductive organ. Its primary functions are urination and sexual intercourse. It consists of three main parts:

    • The glans penis: The cone-shaped head of the penis.
    • The shaft: The main body of the penis.
    • The foreskin (prepuce): A retractable fold of skin covering the glans penis (present in uncircumcised individuals).
  • Erection: The penis becomes erect when blood fills the corpora cavernosa and corpus spongiosum, two spongy tissues within the penis. This process is triggered by sexual stimulation or arousal.

  • Size: Penile size varies significantly among individuals. Average erect penis length is often cited as being between 5 and 6 inches (12.7-15.2 cm), but this is just an average, and a wide range of sizes is considered normal.

  • Hygiene: Proper hygiene is important for maintaining penile health. This includes regular washing with soap and water, especially under the foreskin (in uncircumcised individuals).

  • Common Conditions: Various conditions can affect the penis, including:

    • Erectile dysfunction: The inability to achieve or maintain an erection sufficient for satisfactory sexual intercourse.
    • Peyronie's disease: The development of fibrous plaques in the penis, leading to curvature and pain during erection.
    • Phimosis: A condition where the foreskin cannot be retracted over the glans penis.
    • Balanitis: Inflammation of the glans penis.
  • Circumcision: The surgical removal of the foreskin. It is often performed for religious, cultural, or medical reasons.
