What is pfks?

Pfks (Phosphofructokinases) are enzymes that play a key role in the glycolytic pathway, which is the metabolic pathway that converts glucose into energy in the form of ATP molecules. There are three isoforms of pfks, each of which has a unique tissue distribution and regulation mechanism. PFK-1 is primarily found in muscle and liver cells and is activated by AMP and other allosteric regulators, while PFK-2 is found in liver and adipose tissue and regulates glycolysis and gluconeogenesis through the production of fructose-2,6-bisphosphate. Finally, PFK-P (PFKFB) has a ubiquitous tissue distribution and is activated by insulin, glucose, and other signaling molecules, as well as through transcriptional regulation. Overall, pfks are essential for energy production in the body and are tightly regulated to maintain metabolic homeostasis.
