What is picklehaub?

Picklehaube is a spiked helmet that was worn by soldiers in the German military during the 19th and early 20th centuries. The helmet was made of leather and had a metal spike on top, and it was designed to protect the head from sword strikes and other blunt damage. The helmet had a distinctive shape and was often accented with brass fittings, including an ornate chinstrap and a circular emblem on the front that displayed the soldier's regiment or branch of service. The picklehaube was first introduced in the mid-1800s and became a symbol of the German military throughout the late 1800s and early 1900s. While the helmet was eventually phased out and replaced by more modern headgear, it remains an iconic representation of German military history.
