What is pieced?

Pieced refers to a quilt-making technique where smaller fabric pieces (called patches) are sewn together to create a larger design or image. This technique has been used for centuries in various forms, from traditional patchwork quilts to contemporary art quilts.

Pieced quilts can come in many different styles, including patchwork, applique, crazy quilts, and improvisational quilts, among others. The types of fabric used can also vary greatly, from cottons and linens to silks and velvets.

The process of piecing a quilt involves cutting fabric into small shapes, arranging them into a desired design, and then sewing them together with a sewing machine or by hand. The seams between the pieces are then ironed flat and sometimes trimmed to reduce bulk.

Piecing is just one step in the overall process of making a quilt, which also includes adding batting for warmth and a backing fabric to finish the quilt.
