What is piometr?

Piometra is a serious and potentially life-threatening infection that occurs in female dogs, cats and other animals. It is characterized by the accumulation of pus in the uterus, which can cause a range of symptoms including fever, lethargy, loss of appetite, vomiting, and excessive thirst. Piometra usually occurs in middle-aged or older female animals who have not been spayed. The most effective treatment for piometra is surgical removal of the uterus (a procedure known as an ovariohysterectomy or spay). If left untreated, piometra can lead to sepsis, organ failure, and death. It is important to seek veterinary treatment promptly if you suspect your pet may have piometra.
