Velupillai Prabhakaran (November 26, 1954 – May 18, 2009) was a Sri Lankan militant and leader of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), a militant group fighting for the creation of an independent Tamil state in Sri Lanka. He founded the LTTE in 1976 and led the group until his death in 2009.
Prabhakaran was born in Velvettithurai, a village in northern Sri Lanka. He dropped out of school at a young age and joined the Tamil separatist movement in the 1970s. He founded the LTTE with a few other militants in 1976 and quickly rose to become its leader.
Under Prabhakaran's leadership, the LTTE carried out a campaign of violence and terrorism, including suicide bombings, which resulted in thousands of deaths. The group also controlled large swaths of territory in northern Sri Lanka during the Sri Lankan Civil War.
Prabhakaran was known for his charisma and for his strict discipline within the LTTE. He was also a skilled military strategist and led the group's military operations during the civil war.
Prabhakaran's death came in 2009, when Sri Lankan forces killed him in a military operation to retake the last remaining LTTE stronghold in the north of the country.
