What is priaps?

Priapism is a condition that causes a prolonged and often painful erection of the penis, typically lasting more than four hours. It is not related to sexual arousal or stimulation and requires immediate medical attention. Priapism can occur in males of any age, but it is most common in men between the ages of 20 and 50. It can be caused by a variety of factors, including blood disorders, medication side effects, injury to the penis or spinal cord, and drug and alcohol abuse. Treatment for priapism can vary depending on the underlying cause, but typically includes draining the blood from the penis and administering medications to relieve the erection and prevent future episodes. Without prompt treatment, priapism can cause permanent damage to the penis and lead to erectile dysfunction.
