What is processional?

A processional is a formal or ceremonial procession that involves movement from one place to another, typically accompanied by music and a particular order or protocol.

Processionals are often associated with religious ceremonies such as weddings, funerals, and graduations, as well as civic events like parades and public celebrations.

In formal religious processions, the order of participants often follows a specific hierarchy or protocol, with the highest-ranking officials or clergy leading the way. Participants may carry symbols, banners, or other objects of significance while walking in step to the music.

In secular processions, the order of participants may be less structured, with groups or individuals marching together in support of a specific cause or message.

While processions can be solemn and serious affairs, they can also be joyful and celebratory, particularly in the context of cultural events and festivals. In some cultures, processions are also an important part of traditional folk rituals and ceremonies.
