What is qiyam?

Qiyam is a term in Islam that refers to the act of standing and praying during the night. It is an important part of night prayers, specifically during the month of Ramadan when Muslims engage in extra prayers, known as taraweeh, after the evening prayer, Isha.

Qiyam is considered to be a voluntary prayer that is highly recommended for Muslims to perform, as it is believed to bring spiritual benefits and blessings. It is a time when one can seek forgiveness, guidance, and closeness to Allah.

During qiyam, Muslims recite additional prayers, read from the Quran, make supplications, and engage in remembrance of Allah. It is a time for reflection, self-discipline, and seeking forgiveness for past sins.

Qiyam can be performed individually at home or in congregation at the mosque. Many mosques offer nightly taraweeh prayers during the month of Ramadan, and some Muslims also choose to perform qiyam on their own.

Overall, qiyam is seen as a way to strengthen one's faith, seek spirituality, and draw closer to Allah through night prayers and reflection.
