What is quetzel?

The quetzal is a strikingly colored bird native to the forests of Central America, particularly in countries such as Guatemala, Costa Rica, and Panama. It is known for its vibrant green plumage, red breast, and long, iridescent tail feathers that can grow up to 3 feet in length.

The quetzal is regarded as a symbol of freedom, beauty, and wealth in Mesoamerican cultures, and it appears in legends, art, and even on the currency of some countries in the region. The bird's name comes from the Nahuatl word "quetzalli," which means precious or sacred.

Quetzals are generally solitary birds that feed on fruits, insects, and small vertebrates. They are known for their distinctive calls, which can be heard echoing through the cloud forests where they live. Quetzals are also quite territorial and will defend their nesting sites fiercely.
