The Resource-Based Relative Value Scale (RBRVS) is a system used to determine the payment for medical services in the United States. It was developed by the American Medical Association (AMA) and implemented in 1992 as part of the Medicare payment system. The RBRVS assigns relative values to medical procedures based on the resources required to provide the service, including physician time, skill, and effort, as well as supplies and equipment. The values are adjusted geographically based on the cost of living and other factors. The RBRVS is used by Medicare and many private insurance companies to determine reimbursement for medical services. It is periodically updated to reflect changes in medical technology and the cost of providing care.
