What is recoater?

A recoater is a device used in additive manufacturing or 3D printing, specifically for powder-based processes like powder bed fusion (PBF) and selective laser sintering (SLS). The recoater spreads a uniform layer of powder material over the build platform or previous layer to create the next layer of the object being printed.

The recoater consists of a recoating blade that is moved back and forth over the build area by a motor. The blade deposits a consistent amount of powder material on the previous layer or build platform, ensuring even distribution and layer thickness. Most recoaters also have a leveling system to provide an even surface for the powder layer.

Recoaters are vital components in powder-based 3D printing systems as they determine the quality and accuracy of each layer of material being fused together. Proper calibration and maintenance of the recoater is essential to achieving consistent and high-quality prints.
