What is rimfire?

Rimfire ammunition is a type of firearm cartridge where the firing pin strikes the base (or rim) of the cartridge to ignite the primer. This design is used in low-pressure cartridges, often for small firearms like pistols and rifles.

Rimfire cartridges are usually less powerful than centerfire cartridges and are typically used for smaller caliber firearms. They are commonly seen in .22 LR (Long Rifle) ammunition, which is widely used for target shooting, plinking, and small game hunting.

Rimfire cartridges are generally less expensive than centerfire cartridges, making them popular for recreational shooters and beginners. However, rimfire cartridges tend to be less reliable and have weaker ignition compared to centerfire cartridges.

Due to the design of rimfire cartridges, they are not reloadable like centerfire cartridges. Once fired, the primer is struck and cannot be reloaded. This makes rimfire ammunition a generally cheaper but less versatile option for shooters.
