RKO Pictures is a film production and distribution company that was founded in 1928. It was originally created as a subsidiary of Radio-Keith-Orpheum (RKO) Radio Pictures, a broadcasting and theatre chain owned by RCA.
RKO Pictures quickly became a major player in the Hollywood film industry, producing and releasing a wide range of successful films during the 1930s and 1940s. Some of RKO's most famous productions include "King Kong," "Citizen Kane," and "It's a Wonderful Life."
Despite its early success, RKO struggled financially throughout the 1950s and 1960s, leading to the eventual sale of the company in 1989. Today, the RKO Pictures brand is owned by independent producer Ted Hartley and remains active in the entertainment industry, primarily focusing on licensing its film library for re-releases and remakes.
