What is running point?

A point guard, often referred to as the running point, is a position in basketball traditionally regarded as the team's primary ball handler and playmaker. They are essentially the floor general, orchestrating the offense and ensuring that the team runs smoothly.

Key responsibilities of the running point include:

  • Dribbling and Ball-Handling: Bringing the ball up the court and maintaining possession, even under pressure.

  • Passing and Playmaking: Distributing the ball to teammates in advantageous scoring positions and initiating offensive plays. The running point usually makes the most assists for the team.

  • Court Vision: Recognizing defensive formations and identifying open teammates.

  • Decision-Making: Making quick and accurate decisions regarding passing, shooting, and driving to the basket.

  • Leadership: Communicating with teammates, directing the offense, and maintaining composure under pressure. A good running point can often serve as a leader for the team.

  • Scoring: While playmaking is their primary focus, they should also be capable of scoring, especially from the perimeter, to keep the defense honest. The running point needs to be able to score to keep defenders from simply passing the ball to another player.
