What is saekdong?

Saekdong is a traditional Korean textile art that involves using brightly colored patches of fabric to create a unique, multi-colored design. The word “saekdong” literally means “multi-colored stripes,” and the technique is often used to create textiles for clothing, bedding, and home décor.

The saekdong technique dates back to the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910), when it was used to create clothing for royalty and the upper class. In addition to its use in clothing, saekdong was also used to create decorative items like curtains, wall hangings, and other household objects.

Today, saekdong is still used in various forms, with modern artists using the technique to add color and texture to art pieces, clothing, and accessories. The traditional style of saekdong continues to be used in Korea, with artisans creating textiles that reflect the country’s rich cultural heritage.
