What is salacca?

Salacca is a genus of palm trees belonging to the family Arecaceae, and is native to Southeast Asia. There are more than 30 different species of salacca, with some of the most commonly cultivated species being Salacca zalacca and Salacca edulis.

The fruit of the salacca tree is known as salak or snake fruit, and it is a small, oval-shaped fruit that is covered in scales like a snake. The creamy white flesh of the fruit is sweet with a slightly acidic taste. Salak is a popular fruit in Southeast Asian countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand.

In addition to being a source of food, salacca trees are also used for their fibers, which are used to make rope and baskets. The sap of the tree is used to make a sweet syrup called gula aren. Salacca trees are cultivated in tropical regions around the world and are often found in gardens and parks.
