What is salpingopharyngeus?

Salpingopharyngeus is a muscle located in the throat that plays a role in the swallowing process. It is one of the muscles of the pharynx, which is the part of the throat that connects the mouth and nasal cavity to the esophagus and larynx.

The salpingopharyngeus muscle helps to elevate the pharynx during swallowing, which assists in the movement of food and liquids from the mouth to the esophagus. It also plays a role in opening and closing the auditory tube, which connects the middle ear to the nasopharynx and helps to equalize pressure in the ear.

In addition to its role in swallowing and maintaining ear function, the salpingopharyngeus muscle also contributes to the overall function of the pharynx in speaking and breathing. It is innervated by the glossopharyngeal nerve (CN IX) and the vagus nerve (CN X).
