Samuel Patch (sometimes spelled Patches) was a famous American daredevil and legend of tall tales. Born in 1803 in Vermont, he is widely known for his incredible feats of jumping and swimming long distances.
He became famous for his death-defying stunts, such as leaping from great heights into water or roaring rivers, earning him the nickname, "The Yankee Leaper."
Patch reportedly made many attempts to jump from the Niagara Falls, but it is unclear as to what really happened since there is no reliable evidence that these stunts actually took place.
Patch's life story is a mixture of fact and fiction, and many details surrounding his life remain shrouded in mystery. Legend has it that he died while attempting a jump in either Niagara Falls or Rochester, NY, in 1829.
