What is sama-bajau?

The Sama-Bajau is a group of people predominantly from the Philippines, Malaysia, and Indonesia. They are also known as the "Sea Gypsies" due to their maritime lifestyle that involves living on boats and relying on fishing and sea trade for their livelihood. The Sama-Bajau, who number around 1.5 million, have a distinct culture, language, and music, which is deeply connected to the ocean and marine life. Historically, they were semi-nomadic, moving from one place to another in search of fish and other marine resources. Today, many Sama-Bajau have settled in coastal areas and continue to practice their traditional way of life, while also adapting to modern living. Despite the challenges they face, including discrimination, poverty, and climate change, the Sama-Bajau maintain a strong sense of community and pride in their cultural heritage.
