What is saprobic?

Saprobic organisms are those that obtain their nutrition by decomposing dead organic matter. They play an important role in the ecosystem by breaking down dead plant and animal material, recycling nutrients, and contributing to the soil fertility. Saprobic organisms can be found in many different environments such as soil, water bodies, and decaying wood. Examples of saprobic organisms include fungi, bacteria, and some species of insects. Some saprobic organisms can cause disease in humans and animals, such as certain species of fungi that can cause respiratory infections or skin infections. However, many saprobic organisms are harmless or even beneficial, such as the fungi used in the production of cheese and bread.
