What is sawn?

Sawn timber is wood that has been cut or sawn using a variety of tools such as saws, saw mills, or saw combinations. The cut pieces can be in various sizes and shapes such as planks, boards, beams, and joists. It is used for construction purposes, furniture making, and many other applications. The process of sawing wood changes the grain structure and results in two distinct types of cuts - flat sawn and quarter sawn. Flat sawn timber is created by slicing straight through a log horizontally, while quarter sawn involves cutting it into quarters and then sawing perpendicular to the growth rings. This results in a more stable and durable wood, particularly in hardwoods. Sawn timber comes in different types of wood including softwoods like pine and fir and hardwoods such as oak, ash, and maple. It is often treated with preservatives to prevent rot, decay, and insects.
