What is selenecereus?

Selenicereus is a genus of cactus that belongs to the family Cactaceae. It is native to Central and South America, and its members are epiphytic or lithophytic. These cacti have long stems, with a woody texture, which can climb vertically up to 30 feet in length. The branches are cylindrical, with prominent ribs that are densely covered with small spines.

The plants bloom large and fragrant flowers that usually open at night-time. The flowers are white or cream-colored, with a fruity scent that attracts pollinators, such as moths and bats. Selenicereus cacti produce juicy fruits called pitayas or dragon fruits, which are edible and nutrition-rich. The fruit has a sweet mild taste and is an important source of vitamins, minerals, and dietary fiber.

Selenicereus cacti are very adaptable and can grow in different environmental conditions. They can tolerate mild frost, drought, and high humidity, making them popular in tropical and subtropical gardens and greenhouses worldwide. Some selenicereus species are considered endangered due to habitat loss, over-harvesting, and illegal trade. Selenicereus grandiflorus is commonly known as Queen of the Night, while Selenicereus anthonyanus is called Fishbone cactus, and Selenicereus chrysocardium is known as the Golden Star cactus.
