What is shaul?

Shaul is a Hebrew name that means "asked for" or "desired." In the Bible, Shaul is most commonly associated with the first king of Israel, who is also known as Saul in English translations. King Saul was chosen by the prophet Samuel to rule over the Israelites, but he eventually fell out of favor with God due to his disobedience and was replaced by David. Shaul is also a common first name in modern Israel, and can be used for both males and females.
