What is shingunto?

Shingunto is a type of Japanese sword that was used exclusively by the military during the 20th century. It was first introduced in 1935 by the Imperial Japanese Army to replace the older katana design. The shingunto was much simpler in design than the katana, with a straight blade and a simple crossguard.

The blade of a shingunto is usually longer and wider than that of a katana, and its shape is optimized for thrusting and chopping rather than the graceful, slashing motions of the katana. The handle is also longer, to accommodate wearing it with a military uniform.

The shingunto was used in combat by the Japanese military during World War II, as well as in the decades following the war. Today, it is still used by some Japanese military units and is sought after by collectors of military memorabilia.
