What is simte?

Simte is an indigenous ethnic group mainly inhabiting the northeastern parts of India, including parts of Mizoram, Manipur, and Assam. They are also known by the name of Simti, Simtaang or Semthai and are known for their unique cultural traditions and practices. The Simte people speak the Simte language, which belongs to the Tibeto-Burman language family. They mostly follow Christianity, although a minority still practice traditional animistic beliefs. The Simte people are skilled in weaving, carpentry, and farming, and the traditional village councils play a dominant role in their social and political lives. The Simte tribe is known for its rich cultural heritage, with unique traditional practices, folk songs, dances, costumes, and beliefs. One of their most colorful festivals is Thalfavang Kut, which is celebrated in the months of October-November, to celebrate the bountiful harvest. Despite challenges and changes in the modern world, the Simte people continue to preserve their culture, language, and traditions.
