What is siphon?

A siphon is a tube or pipe used to transfer liquid from a higher level surface to a lower level surface by means of gravity. It works by ensuring the downward flow of the liquid by drawing it through an airtight pipe and over an intermediate point that is higher than the intake. It is commonly used for transferring liquids like water, fuel or chemicals from one container to another or when emptying a container. Siphons can be manually operated or can be automatic with the use of pumps and valves. The principle of siphon has been used in many different applications, ranging from simple home use to industrial and commercial purposes. However, it is important to note that siphoning can be dangerous if not done properly, as some substances can be hazardous to inhale or ingest.
