Skandalopetra is a traditional type of weight used by Greek fishermen to catch fish by hand. The word "skandalopetra" means "rock that causes scandal" in Greek, referring to the noise it makes when it falls or hits the seabed. These weights are made of irregular-shaped stones, usually volcanic rocks, that are tied to a rope and used to sink fishing nets or lines. Skandalopetra fishing requires physical strength, skill, and a deep understanding of the sea and the behavior of fish. In recent years, skandalopetra has become a popular sport for both locals and tourists, especially in the island of Ikaria. The use of skandalopetra has also been recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage by the Greek Ministry of Culture.
