What is spiling?

Spiling is a technique that involves the use of small, pointed sticks or rods to measure the distance between two surfaces. Typically, spiling is used when fitting one surface to another, such as when installing wood paneling or floorboards.

Spiling involves marking the position of the pointed rod on the surface being fitted, then transferring that mark to the second surface. By repeating this process with multiple spiles, an accurate and precise fit can be achieved.

Spiling requires careful measurement and attention to detail, but it can be very effective for achieving a tight, seamless fit between two surfaces. It is commonly used in woodworking, boatbuilding, and construction.
