What is stadiametric?

Stadiametry is a technique used to determine the range or distance to an object, using the known size of an object in the field of view of a surveying instrument. This technique is commonly used in the measurement of distances to objects which are difficult or impossible to reach, such as trees, buildings, and mountains.

In stadiametry, the distance to an object is calculated using the principle of similar triangles. The user measures the height of an object of known size (such as a meter stick) and notes the size of the object in the field of view (such as a tree). By comparing the size of the object in the field of view with the known size of the object, the user can determine the distance to the object.

Stadiametry is commonly used in surveying, forestry, and photography. It requires a surveying instrument such as a theodolite or rangefinder, as well as knowledge of the size of objects in the field of view.
