What is supramax?

Supramax is a term used to describe a specific category of bulk carrier vessels used in the shipping industry. These vessels generally have a deadweight tonnage between 50,000 and 65,000 metric tons, making them larger than Handymax and smaller than Panamax vessels.

They are designed for carrying dry bulk commodities such as coal, grain, iron ore, and cement. Supramax vessels typically have five cargo holds and are equipped with cranes that allow for efficient loading and unloading of cargo. Due to their size and versatility, they are often used for short and medium-haul routes as well as for transoceanic transportation.

Supramax vessels have become increasingly popular in recent years due to their ability to navigate in ports with shallow drafts, which reduces port fees and allows them to access smaller ports that are not accessible to larger bulk carriers. Additionally, their fuel efficiency and lower maintenance costs make them an attractive option for shipping companies.
