What is surge?

A surge refers to a sudden and temporary increase in something, usually in something that is electric or electronic, such as an electrical current. Electrical surge typically occurs when there is a spike in the flow of electrical current in a circuit. This can be caused by lightning, power surges from the utility company, or malfunctioning electrical equipment. A surge can cause damage to electronic devices such as computers, televisions, refrigerators, etc. To protect against surges, surge protectors are often used. These devices have components that absorb or redirect the excess electrical energy before it can cause damage to the connected devices.
