What is t-90?

The T-90 is a Russian third-generation main battle tank (MBT). It's a development of the T-72B, incorporating many features found on the T-80.

Here are some key aspects:

  • Protection: It boasts composite armor, including Kontakt-5 explosive reactive armor (ERA), which provides significant protection against anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs). The T-90 also includes a Shtora-1 electro-optical active protection system (APS), designed to disrupt laser rangefinders and designators used by some ATGMs.

  • Firepower: The main armament is a 125mm 2A46M smoothbore gun, capable of firing a variety of ammunition, including armor-piercing fin-stabilized discarding sabot (APFSDS), high-explosive anti-tank (HEAT), and high-explosive fragmentation (HE-FRAG) rounds. It can also fire the 9M119M Refleks anti-tank guided missile.

  • Mobility: Powered by a V-84MS diesel engine (or V-92S2 in later models), it offers good mobility and range. The T-90 has a torsion bar suspension system.

  • Variants: There are several variants, including the T-90A, T-90S (export version), T-90M (an advanced upgrade), and others. Each variant introduces improvements in armor, firepower, and electronics.

  • Service History: The T-90 has seen combat in various conflicts, including the Syrian Civil War and the Russo-Ukrainian War. It has been exported to numerous countries.
