What is tangaras?

Tangaras are a diverse group of small to medium-sized birds found in Central and South America. There are over 350 different species of tangaras, which belong to the family Thraupidae.

Tangaras are known for their brightly colored plumage, which can be a combination of blues, greens, yellows, oranges, and reds. They have a variety of bill shapes depending on their diet, some being insectivorous and others being frugivorous. They are also known for their unique vocalizations, which can range from simple chirps to complex songs.

Tangaras typically live in forested areas and can be found at a range of elevations, from lowland rainforests to cloud forests. They are active during the day and are often seen in small flocks searching for food in trees and bushes.

Some species of tangaras are considered threatened due to habitat loss and fragmentation, as well as illegal capture for the pet trade. Conservation efforts are currently underway to protect these colorful and important members of the neotropical avian community.
