Tecun Uman was a legendary warrior and leader of the indigenous K'iche' people in what is now Guatemala. He is especially revered as a hero of the Mayan resistance against Spanish colonization in the 16th century. According to legend, Tecun Uman fought valiantly against the conquistadors led by Pedro de Alvarado at the battle of Xelajú in 1524. Although he ultimately died in battle, his bravery inspired future generations of indigenous people to continue fighting for their independence and rights. Today, Tecun Uman is celebrated as a national hero and symbol of indigenous pride in Guatemala, and his image is often seen on murals, clothing, and other cultural artifacts.
