What is terere?

Tereré is a traditional cold beverage that originates from Paraguay. It is made by mixing yerba mate leaves with cold water and sometimes adding herbs, fruits, or juices for flavor. Tereré is commonly enjoyed in hot weather as a refreshing and hydrating drink.

The drink is typically shared among friends and family in a social setting, with a group sitting in a circle and passing around a gourd (also known as a guampa) filled with the tereré mixture. Each person drinks from the same straw, called a bombilla, which is traditionally made out of metal and features a filter at the bottom to prevent the leaves from entering the mouth.

Tereré is not only a popular beverage in Paraguay but also in other South American countries such as Argentina and Brazil. It is considered a social and cultural tradition that fosters camaraderie and conversation among those sharing the drink.
