What is tijanis?

Tijanis are members of the Tijaniyya Sufi order, a Sunni Muslim movement founded in the 18th century in North Africa by Sheikh Ahmad Tijani. The order has a strong presence in West Africa, particularly in Senegal, Gambia, Nigeria, Mali, and Niger.

The Tijaniyya order emphasizes the importance of the love of Prophet Muhammad and the benefits of zikr (remembrance of God) as a means of achieving closeness to God. Tijani followers also practice the traditional Islamic rituals such as daily prayer and fasting during Ramadan.

Sheikh Ibrahim Niasse is considered one of the most important leaders of the Tijaniyya order; he expanded the order across West Africa and established the city of Medina Baye in Senegal as the order's center. Tijani followers also place a strong emphasis on hospitality, charity, and helping the community. The Tijaniyya order is known for its peaceful and contemplative approach to Islam and its emphasis on spiritual development through the guidance of a sheikh (spiritual leader).
