What is tonn?

A tonn, also spelled tonne, is a metric unit of mass equal to 1,000 kilograms or approximately 2,204.62 pounds. It is commonly used outside of the United States and is the preferred unit of measurement for commerce and industry in many countries. The term "tonne" is derived from the French word "tonneaux," meaning "tun," which is a large barrel used to transport goods. Tonn is often used to measure the weight of heavy vehicles, cargo, and industrial equipment. It is also used in the context of estimating the greenhouse gas emissions associated with certain activities, such as transportation or manufacturing.
