What is trache?

The trachea (also known as the windpipe) is a tube-like structure that connects the larynx (voice box) to the bronchi in the lungs. It is approximately 4 inches long and 1 inch in diameter, and is composed of cartilage rings that provide support and prevent the trachea from collapsing. The trachea also contains cilia (hair-like structures) that help to move mucus and debris out of the respiratory system. A blockage in the trachea can lead to difficulty breathing or even suffocation. In emergency situations, a tracheostomy may be performed to create an opening in the trachea to allow for better air flow.
