What is trochar?

A trochar is a sharp-pointed surgical instrument used to puncture the body in order to remove fluid or tissue from a cavity. It is commonly used in medical procedures such as thoracentesis (removal of fluid from the chest cavity) or paracentesis (removal of fluid from the abdominal cavity).

The trochar typically consists of a sharp metal tube with a cutting edge and a hollow center to allow fluids to be suctioned out. It is inserted into the body through a small incision or puncture, then the internal stylet is removed, leaving the hollow tube in place to allow drainage.

Trochars come in a variety of sizes and shapes, depending on the specific procedure being performed. They are typically sterilized before each use to prevent infection. Proper training and expertise are essential when using a trochar to avoid causing injury or complications to the patient.
